Review of The Flowers of War (2011) by Elizabeth R — 21 Jul 2012
Flowers of War is a brutal, horrific film at times. It takes place during one of the worst war crimes ever committed in history-the Nanking massacre. Christian Bale delivers one of his best performances an American mortician who through a series of extremely evil circumstances, becomes the caretaker of a group of school girls, and a group of prostitutes.
Unlike in most films where violence is celebrated and war is glorified, Flowers of War shows it's disgusting side. The impact of war on the civilians who have done nothing, and the war crimes committed by the invading countries.
There's never a dull minute, as the director does not waste his time in setting up an extremely hostile, extremely violent environment where anyone can be killed. Flowers of War is a moving film, and possibly one of the best films produced last year.
