Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Lou Lumenick (2,103) for New York Post (6,650) on 28 Feb 2004

It's a drawn-out look at politics that's largely devoid of the trademark humor that long ago got New Wave veteran Chabrol labeled the Gallic…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Michael Booth (186) for Denver Post (1,096) on 09 Jan 2004

Leave reason behind, back in steerage class, and simply breathe in the foibles of the (upper) crust on this crème brûlée…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Richard Nilsen (100) for Arizona Republic (3,909) on 28 Nov 2003

Each of the characters in the film is so real, so fully drawn, that you feel you know him or her as a person, not as fiction…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Kim Morgan (275) for Oregonian (1,550) on 21 Nov 2003

On face value, The Flower of Evil is pure Chabrol, but it lacks the power he brings to human relations and social classes, where often violent,…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Chris Hewitt (St. Paul) (2,277) for St. Paul Pioneer Press (4,360) on 21 Nov 2003

Flower toys with us, holding back information and hinting that there's more to the story than meets the eye…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Chris Hewitt (2,086) for St. Paul Pioneer Press (4,360) on 21 Nov 2003

Flower toys with us, holding back information and hinting that there's more to the story than meets the eye…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Jeffrey M. Anderson (3,573) for Combustible Celluloid (2,644) on 17 Nov 2003

The picture wanders a bit, but every so often the master unleashes something very cool -- such as an ominous birdcage looming in the foreground…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By G. Allen Johnson (514) for San Francisco Chronicle (7,630) on 14 Nov 2003

You've heard this one before, and in an edgier way -- yet you still admire the old-fashioned storytelling…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Mary F. Pols (536) for Contra Costa Times (478) on 14 Nov 2003

An elegant, gracefully made movie, but it unreels with something of the same dull sense of preordainment…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Arthur Lazere (236) for culturevulture.net (793) on 14 Nov 2003

[Not] a hint of suspense or even foreboding. Chabrol might as easily have been telling about a bridge tournament as about betrayal and murder…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Frank Swietek (3,473) for One Guy's Opinion (3,473) on 10 Nov 2003

Seductively sinister...an exercise in mood and style, experting creating an atmosphere of understated anger and vague dread…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Roger Ebert (5,190) for Chicago Sun-Times (7,580) on 07 Nov 2003

I feel such an affection for Chabrol and his work that I probably can't see The Flower of Evil as it would be experienced by a first-time viewer…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Cherryl Dawson And Leigh Ann Palone (956) for TheMovieChicks.com (956) on 07 Nov 2003

Mediocre melodrama - if you take away all the talk about incest, rape and murder there would be about ten minutes of door-to-door campaigning…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Eugene Novikov (936) for Film Blather (908) on 06 Nov 2003

Story is all soap opera, but the amount of mileage Chabrol gets from it is fairly impressive, exploring the ways that family lines pass crimes…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Robin Clifford (1,670) for Reeling Reviews (4,376) on 06 Nov 2003

The slightness of Chabrol's latest work, for all its machinations of murder and scandal, keeps [The Flower of Evil] from being much more than…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Michael Wilmington (1,474) for Chicago Tribune (6,211) on 06 Nov 2003

Stylish, ingenious and gleaming with charm, wit and malice, it's another expert blend of domestic drama and crime thriller, a vivisection of…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Ella Taylor (978) for L.A. Weekly (3,142) on 29 Oct 2003

Although impeccably acted and absorbing enough as a family drama, the movie is superfluously littered with broad hints as to its deeper meanings…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Steve Rhodes (1,488) for Internet Reviews (1,487) on 27 Oct 2003

Handsomely shot and respectably acted but decidedly dull…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Desson Thomson (1,673) for Washington Post (9,851) on 23 Oct 2003

This movie is a mixed repast: good food and wine laced with enough misanthropic poison to turn any stomach…

Review of The Flower of Evil (2003)

By Andy Klein (675) for Los Angeles CityBeat (424) on 16 Oct 2003

There is nothing wrong with the acting here nor with the film in general, other than the sense that Chabrol is doing good work in turf where…
