Review of The Florida Project (2017) by Asher K — 10 Apr 2018
In true slice-of-life fashion, this movie doesn't have all that much plot preceding its climactic conclusion; it just basks in the world of a modern-day Huck Finn in the young Moonee, whose bleak playground of chipped paint projects in the shadow of Disneyland are colored in pastel by the wonder of childhood.
The audience knows what Moonee doesn't: as we see her mirror the characteristics and morals of her mother, we know if things continue as they are, she is doomed to a future of her mother's same mistakes and struggles in a vicious cycle.
It's both sad and beautiful, with an ending that, on reflection, is a perfect summation of moments of beauty and celebration amidst an uncertain future.
