Review of The Flock (2007) by Paul T — 16 Dec 2008
An potentially interesting diversion into non-cop territory, this film nevertheless stumbles over a few cliches on its way to its finale. Gere plays the part of the troubled perv cop with earnest intensity and credit must go to his performance in trying to make this film work.
Claire Danes, on the other hand, acts with her hair and has two expressions: frowny and/or smiley. But what really ruined this film for me was the cinematography and editing. There didn't seem to be a moment in this film that wasn't over-lit, grained, chopped or zoomed into with frightening speed, as though something violent was happening in the projection room (the same flaw that ruined the last Bourne movie for me).
Although the sounds accompanying this relentless visual mash-up were also equally exaggerated, The Flock had some of the most cinematic music I've heard in recent years and its use gave this movie a gravitas it might not have had if they'd used something like the soundtrack for Se7en, for example.
Music aside, this film could have easily maintained a sense of dread and unease without all the MTV effects but the script and acting were spoiled because someone thought they were editing a zombie movie.
A shame.
