Review of The Flame and the Arrow (1950) by Movie K — 27 Jun 2016
Pretty old school swashbuckling movie. Burt Lancaster is like an Italian Robin Hood in the community. Incoming conqueror Frank Allenby pet hawk is shot dead by Burt. Frank has already taken his ex-wife Lynn Baggett and right at the spot he took Burt's son Gordon Gebert.
Burt is hurt by an arrow while trying to escape and save his son. Robert Douglas intend to marry Virginia Mayo but was rejected and tied to his cart. Burt rob him and fight him which in the end he join the merry gang.
Burt and gang invade the castle to rescue his son but fails. Nick Cravat the mute acrobat best friend decide to kidnap Virginia back to their camp. She's the niece of Frank. When she is chain collar, she try to escape but Robert is not buying her proposal.
Nick is send to the castle to hand the letter but the guards torture him. Frank is gonna execute the people for helping Burt. He release Virginia and strike a plan to save them all by give up himself.
The executioner is swap with their own people and rigged to fake his hanging. The rest of the gang are prisoners including Robert. Frank decide to celebrate by inviting the acrobat circus. Robert tell Frank about the rebel plan to attack and want to marry Virginia.
She go to Burt aunt home to warn of the betrayal of Robert. They decide to strike and dress as acrobat to enter the castle. It is an all out fight between the two sides. Robert fight Burt preventing him to save his son.
Frank use this chance to get ahead. Burt killed Robert in the dark room and Lynn is killed by Frank. Frank hold the boy as hostage. Burt use the arrow and shot him dead from far. In the end Burt save his son and get back Virginia.
