Review of The Five-Year Engagement (2012) by Jodi T — 12 Oct 2012
Despite some winning chemistry between the two leads, Nicholas Stoller's film, based on an original screenplay by star Jason Segel, never quite comes together. It oscillates between traditional rom-com and gross out comedy, never quite settling into a happy medium, and the secondary characters remain nothing more than one-joke ciphers.
This is a real shame as clearly a lot of effort has gone into the production - the film looks good, it is very well acted by the two leads - and some of the jokes work well (even if they are tired and familiar).
Also, the film is far too long.
