Review of The Five-Year Engagement (2012) by Gareth W — 16 Mar 2013
I thought this romantic comedy was pretty good and I like Jason Segal and Emily Blunt quite a bit, but this film had a lot of problems. The biggest problem was that it couldn't decide which to be first, an R-rated comedy or a typical romantic comedy.
And beause of this, at times the laughs didn't work because the film was already being serious and other times you couldn't take the film serious due to so many laughs. I know this film came from the makers of Forgetting Sarah Marshall, another romantic comedy, but that film definitely put the comedy first and let the romance fit in just a little.
I also really liked the supporting cast and thought they added a lot to the film. I did feel the film ran too long as it's over 2 hours long. Overall an entertaining film that ran a little long and couldn't decide what it wanted to be, but still not a terrible film.
