Review of The Five Obstructions (2003) by David C — 22 Mar 2010
This film made me want to do several things, and unusually for a Lars von Trier film, they didn't involve violence directed at the mad Dane. If anything, it gave me quite a different viewpoint with which to look at von Trier's other work, specifically for film as therapy and what limits one has as a film-maker to provoke.
As to the film itself, Jorgen Leth shows himself to be infinitely patient and brilliantly adept and taking anything von Trier throws at him, with the result of some quite breathtaking and touching versions of his "Perfect Human".
