Review of The Fisher King (1991) by Joe L — 12 Dec 2009
Wow, just wow! I haven't seen this movie in many years and now that I've come back to appreciating what a genius Terry Gilliam really is I had to buy it and see it again. I'm glad I did because Gilliam created a film that is a perfect blend of dark comedy, drama, romance and mixes them all together to create a modern day New York fairy tale.
Some of the shots and all the set designs remind me that only Gilliam can pull of such things, and it's what gave the movie a realistic feel but at the same time making it feel fantastic. The next best thing about the movie is the performances from Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges, the two are incredible and it was one of those scenarios that the parts seemed written ONLY for them.
It's pretty long as well, but the story is so epic and never gets boring. There is a lot of really dark aspects to the story as the heart of it deals with redemption and facing ones demons before you can truly move on and live happy.
Still the movie has a great ending and both our guys are happy with their girls (Ruehl and Plummer whom also do great jobs.) So once again damn you Gilliam as I re experience all your films again old and new I think I found my favorite and you just have to blow my mind again and again.
That is because the Fisher King, among Brazil, Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas, and 12 Monkeys is another Gilliam masterpiece.
