Review of The Fisher King (1991) by Nicholas M — 16 Nov 2013
An emotionally powerful human drama told as an epic fantasy, this is an odd one for everyone involved, but the oddness is what makes it so exhilarating. Jeff Bridges is flawless as always, giving the film a sense of coolness it would have otherwise lacked, while the plight of his character is truly devastating.
Robin Williams on the other hand, gives his most underrated performance; he's hilarious and tragic in a way you've seen him come close to matching, but not quite. The Fisher King is a film with all the ingredients to go horribly wrong in so many ways, and that it turns out somewhat perfect makes for wonderful viewing.
It's inspiring, uplifting, whimsical, and downright wacko. A one-of-a-kind cinematic wonder, which is basically Terry Gilliam's specialty. The man never makes an uninteresting film.
