Review of The Fisher King (1991) by Tyler M — 03 Dec 2007
A Modern Day Tale About The Search For Love, Sanity, Ethel Merman And The Holy Grail.
It's a touching comedy/drama with a solid cast and great characters.
The Story: A washed up radio DJ, Jack Lucas, tries to help a homeless man, Parry, find love. That's the basics of the story, but there's actually a lot of depth in this...Parry is widowed when a psychopath kills his wife after listening to a radio broadcast, he has a nervous break down and finds himself living on the streets. Jack Lucas, holds himself responsible for the death of Parry's because something he said on the radio pushed the killer to do what he did. Feeling responsible for what has happened, he tries to redeem himself by helping Parry move on with his life...Clocking in at around two and a half hours, it moves along decently but still somewhat slowly. The cinematography and semi-stylish look of the film help to keep you involved although it's the characters that will keep you watching.
The Cast: Robin Williams, Jeff Bridges...These two work beyond well together. Robin Williams plays the part of Parry, the crazy, loveable homeless man. You can't not love his character, you'll laugh and cry with him throughout this film. Playing the part with such sincerity, he's the one that's really going to pull you into this film. Jeff Bridges plays the part of Jack Lucas, the jaded and cynical ex-radio DJ. He's not going to pull you in like Williams, but he's still damn good here. The two of them together on screen make this one worth seeking out and watching.
One to Five Scale: 4.
It's only it's length that keeps it from being a five...Well that and a scene of violence that's just a little too violent...Loveable characters and great story make this one worth your time.
