Review of The First Time (2012) by Mike C — 19 May 2013
Actually not terrible. Between some of the generic teen drivel are some pretty relatable moments. Oddly enough, it made me think of Ian McEwan's "On Chesil Beach." I just listened to a book that mentioned that book, and I just started McEwan's newest novel. But the big scene in this movie is definitely similar to the brilliance of that short book. Anyway, Dylan O'Brien is surprisingly good. It seems like I've seen him in another movie but I don't recognize any of his other stuff on imdb. Likewise for Britt Robertson. She's a bit too quirky but otherwise a nice female lead. Victoria Justice plays a small role and the big surprise is seeing Christine Taylor as a high school junior's mom. Damn, I'm getting old.
The only real complaint is some of the cheesiness and cookie-cutter characters. C'mon, the bf has to be that kind of guy? Dave has two friends: an accented hipster and a big black guy who is mostly quiet except when dropping a big bit of wisdom at the end? That all diminishes the rest of the movie, which is rated 6.8 on imdb. That's pretty respectable. Plus, there are virtually no haters on the imdb boards. Pretty rare. It's no Elvis and Annabelle, but....
