Review of The First Purge (2018) by John S — 03 Jul 2018
Essentially more of the same. The Purge has been a notably consistent franchise; however, its consistency is established on a passable basis, meaning bluntly that while all of its entries are not bad, none of them are great either.
This trend of uniform mediocrity is once again captured in this fourth installment. The idea explored by these films in and of itself is a truly fascinating horror/thriller concept, especially one to continuously spring up close to Independence Day.
It arouses speculation on the probability of a similar scenario being implemented in real life -- which is a truly terrifying thought. This sense of tangibility, blurring the line between fiction and reality in a day and age where the worst is constantly picketed as a never-ending plausibility, is the most terrifying aspect to these movies.
Nevertheless, the sting of this idea is growing fainter. Even though none of these films, in my opinion, are legitimately poor in quality, they are also not quite interesting enough to inspire anything more than the same fictitious ideas they harbor.
....now for the fourth consecutive time.
