Review of The Firm (1993) by Kimmo H — 07 Jun 2008
Cruise was slow to watch - he does the full range of emotions, but seems to only do them one at a time. The first fifteen minutes of the film was wonderfully wry, but after that it slows down with the constant interruption of "relationship scenes" between Cruise and Tripplehorn where they go all method and the producers hope we'll be overwhelmed by their chemistry.
Gene Hackman and Ed Harris bump the movie up a notch every time they simply walk into a scene, but Hackman gets his own relationship and confessional mush to try and plough through as well. There's a great story in there but you have to wade through so much to find it.
I think it compares very badly to other Grisham adaptations.
