Review of The Firm (1993) by Daniel K — 21 Aug 2011
3: I have to say that I usually thoroughly enough John Grisham film adaptations and this one is no exception. Tom Cruise plays his usual role, which means he is eminently watchable. I think I prefer pictures like The Pelican Brief, but I am more than happy to come back to this one again and again once every couple years or so.
I think what makes it work so well is it's perversion of the American dream and how unexpected it is in some ways. Despite my high rating, I do certainly see that the film has significant shortcomings, not the least of which is that "the firm" doesn't seem nearly evil enough.
The sense of danger isn't as pervasive as it should be, even if we are thoroughly entertained despite the excessive length.
