Review of The Firm (1993) by Jason K — 28 Sep 2014
"The Firm" is one of the great thrillers from the 90's. Based on the Grisham best-seller, it's one of the rare cases where the movie improves on the book. Sydney Pollack directs with a deft hand, and the 154 min.
running time allows the story to be fleshed out(rare with a summer release). Tom Cruise is perfectly cast. He excells at this type of role. Gene Hackman is brilliant as always, and makes his part interesting.
The rest of the ensemble are all good-there's alot of casting against type, which helps make the plot twists work. (You will never see another flick that has Wilford Brimley as a villian, and he is a disturbingly creepy heavy)The screenplay crafts a fantastic climax, creating an ending more satisfying than the novel's.
You've probaly seen this one, but if you haven't-well, rent it, and enjoy a fun ride!
