Review of The Final Destination (2009) by Nate S — 30 Oct 2012
Let me say two things before talking about this movie: First off, I loved the original Final Destination when it was released. I found it to be an original take on the horror genre during the 'slasher revival' of the 90s. The second one was ok, and the third one was so unmemorable that I forgot I even watched it until about an hour into it (the apparent second time through).
Secondly, I hate that movies are all 3D now; partially because I can't partake with blindness in my left eye, but also because I feel the camera angles become cheesy with things HAVING to come out at the audience.
That said, I really enjoyed this (2D) movie. I put it on with the intention of only half-watching it--simply noise to put on in the background, but I found myself glued to the screen, tensing my body in suspense of Death's next kill and how it will transpire. I hadn't felt that way about any of the other films.
The movie is not even close to a masterpiece. The characters have zero depth, and the story is practically non-existent; however, I don't expect too many fans of the franchise going into this movie expecting anything more than interesting death scenes (as terrible a thought as that may be).
If you liked the others, there's no reason why you won't like this one--the deaths are more imaginative and intricate, but if you're not a fan of thin plots and uninteresting characters, it's best to find another destination.
