Review of The Fighter (2010) by Alex M — 02 May 2013
I could care less about boxing, and I'm not usually all for sports movies, but the reason why I loved 'The Fighter' so much was that it focused on the drama outside the game. While the story is solid enough - it's nothing that special, but it serves its purpose - the real excitement lies in the performances from its cast.
It's hard to say anybody in the strong supporting cast outdoes the other; Amy Adams is simply superb as Mickey's girlfriend Charlene, Melissa Leo is utterly outstanding as Mickey's mother, and if that wasn't enough, Christian Bale delivers a perfect performance as Mickey's brother Dicky.
Mark Wahlberg is by no means bad in this film - it's actually one of the best films I've seen him in - but he simply doesn't steal the scenes he's in like the supporting cast does. The cast is the emotional center of this film, turning what could have been a cheesy film into a raw and entertaining one.
'The Figher' not only introduced me to David O. Russell's excellent directorial work, but it has also become one of my favorite sports movies to date.
