Review of The Fighter (2010) by Rory P — 17 Apr 2014
I love good boxing movies. There's something about the sport that lends itself to being great material for films. The desperation in the ring, the trouble in the personal lives of the fighters and how it gets into the ring, the epic final match; all of these tools are used to create epic films.
This movie in particular has a fascinating story between two brothers, played by Mark Walhberg and Christian Bale, and how their relationship with each other and others in their family is both beneficial and detrimental.
The movie explores the social aspects of their life, and how even those who have risen up from their troubled backgrounds can still be dragged down by the people who they stay in contact with. Micky's family, his brother included, prove to be nothing but trouble for his boxing career and personal life, and yet he still holds onto them because they are, in fact, his family.
It's a great film, and I highly recommend that you see it.
