Review of The Fifth Element (1997) by Matthew C — 02 Dec 2012
Really the only good thing in this movie, and I mean ONLY, is Bruce Willis. He's just cool and always awesome as the post-cop/military who saves the world when it's not his responsibility. One could make a case for the art direction, costumes, and performances, as well as some impressive cg for '97.
But Willis brings it all home. Besson's vision begins well but it gets pretty crazy visually and story-wise. Although, I must say the core of the story is very simple and interesting especially with what the fifth element actually is.
It's the wrapping that gets a little much, I mean Chris Tucker and Gary Oldman are outrageous but excel each at embodying those characters. While some moments are very charming or even borderline moving, most of the film is being silly and hopes you'll be along for a ride, which I was.
Fun movie, don't judge, we'll just call it what it is.
