Review of The Favourite (2018) by Vj L — 28 Dec 2018
THE FAVOURITE - Movie Review.
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.
It is the early 18th century. A frail, short-tempered Queen Anne is on the throne. Her close friend Lady Sarah Churchill governs the country in Queen Anne's place when she tends to her wounds. Abigail Masham, a new servant, is now under the wing of Lady Sarah. Abigail seeks power. She will not let anyone stand in her way.
This is a beautiful, hilarious, unsettling film that constantly contradicts itself. And it does so in all the best ways. Queen Anne (Olivia Coleman) is childish. Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) is cold and strong. Abigail Masham (Emma Stone) is intelligent and conniving. Their interactions are tense and mean-every move is a move for power. Every word is to strike down the next. It's like listening in on a passive aggressive conversation-it keeps you laughing uncomfortably. The camera captures every moment through mostly wide angles and awkward movements that perfectly capture the tone at hand.
THE FAVOURITE is a hilarious, weird, tense period drama with a powerful conclusion.
