Review of The Favourite (2018) by Dara W — 05 Jan 2019
'The Favourite' is the funniest and wittiest film of 2018 and is a testament to how mood can make or break a film. Writer's need to watch this film and take notes. The writing may be the best aspect of the film (Colman certainly steals the show).
It's also the best film ever made about sexuality masked as a period piece set in the 18th century. The acting is beyond satisfying. The most effective technique is the fish bowl effect lanthimos uses as we're watching these very flawed, yet incredibly strong women take us down a twisty road.
I won't give it's outrageously delicious plot away however if you are to see it, then you MUST be open minded, pay attention and enjoy perfectly timed perverse humor. The only war on screen that takes place in the movie is the rapid exchange of dialogue so devilish at times yet you can't help but indulge in its ability to be a period piece that knows how to balance art and very funny performances.
Olivia Colman will win best actress and Emma Stone will win best supporting actress. It's one of the year's best, if not the best.
