Review of The Favourite (2018) by Lisa M — 17 Dec 2018
Is there nothing new under the sun when it comes to plots? Whether intentional or not, this was an obvious twist on King Lear. Best be aware of the fox in the proverbial hen house. Just as Lear chose his youngest flattering daughter who fawned over him rather than choosing as heir, his straight-forward daughter, so goes the plot here with the Queen choosing the doting peasant Abigail.
Of course we see this coming, and it is no surprise. Those Royals are so gullible! Plot aside, since it has been done to death, the period dress and makeup is flamboyant and visually interesting. As others have mentioned the music made me want to stab myself in my ears, but the ending with Anne''s 17 children, er rabbits, was just sad and disappointing.
Bawdy, raunchy, slightly funny, the pathetic Anne finally comes full circle and realizes that she has, indeed, made a mistake. How is this any different that much of our modern day politics? Apparently there is really nothing new under the sun--only altered views.
