Review of The Fault in Our Stars (2014) by Bradford Y — 13 Jan 2015
Great concept --- barely tolerable execution. Entirely believable boy toy Elgort/Gus deserved a credible love interest --- and --- dialogue to match. The always superlative Willem Dafoe is inexplicably monotone, monochrome and utterly wasted.
Laura Dern adds nothing --- as does her on screen husband, whatshisname. Interestingly --- lesser supporting roles are well cast and performed. Viewers who barely survived Old Yeller, Hachi, Bambi or Marley --- will walk away heads up and dry eyed --- finding fault in these stars and writers.
See this one to understand how a great concept can be lost in poor casting and writing.
