Review of The Fault in Our Stars (2014) by Timothy G — 16 Jan 2015
A sad, yet heartwarming movie that takes us on a journey of young love, but somehow is wise and funny without being overly sentimental. The story of Hazel and Gus is somehow, miraculously fresh and positive even as it takes us to the depths of two people who are doomed to live short (but meaningful) lives. And while they realize that their stories may not make headlines, they are astute enough to realize that that they have changed each other's lives.
I can't tell you enough how much I absolutely loved this film. I hadn't read the book so I had absolutely no expectations going in. My mom had told me how great this movie is, but she likes most movies where one of the characters fights a crippling ailment or disease. Basically anything on Lifetime. I was not expecting a film about real love, hope, and an appreciation of Anne Frank.
The writing is fantastic (and feels real even though it's not based on a true story) and the acting is just as good. Shailene Woodley was captivating and holds the soul of the movie in her hands...and ends up doing fantastic things with it.
It surprises me that this movie does not have any Oscar nominations even though it is just as good- if not better- than Boyhood. Highly recommended.
