Review of The Fate of the Furious (2017) by Stanley M — 18 Apr 2017
Fast and Furious 8's script is all in service to amp up the franchise signature spectacle and action. With each instalment, the car chases and fight scenes get more outlandish and unbelievable, yet they do maintain a bit of an adrenaline rush.
What's missing now though is a level of suspense that hasn't been there since the Justin Lin movies. The cast is as charismatic as ever - Diesel and Johnson are at the height of their badassery, Ludacris and Tyrese get funnier and funnier with each flick and Theron makes for a delectable villain.
Statham would have been a welcome addition to the franchise but his storyline (which is crucial) does not make sense, rendering the past movies meaningless. Then again, plot in these types of movies are really beside the point.
More than any flick in this franchise, this is the one where you really need to check your brain out the door before strapping in.
