Review of The Fate of the Furious (2017) by Wiley S — 09 Aug 2017
Perfect Ending to Fast and Furious Series.
Upon hearing mixed reviews about this action packed series I decided to give the movie a shot considering I've seen the other seven movies. "The Fate of the Furious" begins with an adrenaline rushed race across the island of Havana and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end. If you have seen the previous seven movies you will definitely not be disappointed with the eighth and possibly final movie. For those that may have not seen the other movies I suggest you watch them! You need to really understand the importance of the team and "family" to truly understand why the furious are up against fate.
A few minutes in the film Dom (Vin Diesel) runs into the unfortunately named villain Cipher (Charlize Theron), a blond-braided hacker with a list of goals: Steal weapons, take over the world, and to bring the furious family down. She's got something on Dom that'll bring him over to her side. "Your team is about to go up against the one thing they can't handle... you," she tells him.
Dom betrays those he holds most dear, his family. From that point on, it's all a matter of getting from Point A to Point B in the quickest amount of time and with the most vehicular destruction as possible. Scenes like the hijacking of an EMP, a car chase involving driverless cars that had been "hacked", and a chase across a frozen Russian lake involving a multitude of cars and a submarine will keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next.
The plot of the story really thickens when you find out why Dom decided to betray his family. This is a question I had in my mind since the very beginning. And suddenly in a scene where Dom and Cipher are discussing what they are going to do next it hits you. After a minor argument Cipher tells Dom that she needs to remind him why he's here. They enter into a separate room and there is his girlfriend from "Fast and furious 6". A few moments into the scene a young child is grabbed from a dark corner of the room, Dom's son. He betrayed his family for family. This is the most important jaw dropping seen as it is the reason for the whole "fate of the furious". As always Dom has his own master plans to bring down cipher, get his son, and return to the family he previously betrayed.
Many people thought that the eighth installment to the fast and furious series was a bust because "once you run out of movie ideas it always leads to someone betraying someone". I thought this was the perfect idea for the eighth movie and it went extremely well with the rest of series as every movie was ultimately about being with family. What other way is there to betray family for more family? The fast and furious series had a good run but, after the eighth movie I'm sure that many fans including myself would like to see it end here and go back to their roots of racing and drifting cars instead of an international crime scene involving cars and everything else along with them. Is it time to go back to the era of the third fast and furious movie and expand on the Tokyo drift series, have a fresh restart, or for the movies to end? Either way I can't wait to hear what decision the producers decide.
