Review of The Fast and the Furious (2001) by David G — 15 Feb 2012
Loud, dumb, music video of a movie that came along at just the right time to capitalise on ever growing hordes of young petrolheads who get boners at the mere thought of neons and nitrous oxide. At it's core TFATF is a very average and unadventurous cops n'robbers/twisted loyalties movie, but with it's niche focus on street racing (with the inevitable deluge of pimped out cars, semi-naked skanks and hip-hop) and wide mainstream appeal it nevertheless became a phenomenom, spawning a successful franchise.
The casting of Vin Diesel in the lead role helped too, even if the big man's simmering charisma is severely put to the test by his cohorts. Some hold their own (Michelle Rodriguez, Rick Yune, Thom Barry), but others (Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Matt Schulze) drag the whole thing down.
Still, as far as logic and realism-free escapism goes, you could do worse.
