Review of The Fast and the Furious (2001) by Damjan R — 12 Apr 2013
While it would be easy to beat on a film like this, and I use the term film loosely. The fact is this type of film offers what so many crave on a daily basis, the experience of something that is not their life.
It would be great to live (I imagine) on the edge of the law like the car drivers or to try and outsmart them (I this case, not that hard) like the cops. What irritates me the most is that this type of film lowers the expectations so much that the fact that it's remotely coherent is a success.
It's not good, it's barely enjoyable for anyone who fancies himself a lover of cinema. So why make it, watch it, write about it? I would imagine that someone out there thought this was "like the best movie ever", so imagine that someone's amazement when other people bury it, and rightfully so.
Maybe that someone will be inspired to seek out better films, because well, almost everything is a step up from this. Almost everything.
