Review of The Fast and the Furious (2001) by Mark R — 16 May 2013
Having avoided this film along with the rest of the series for the longest time, as it didn't seem like my kind of thing, the trailer for Fast 6 intrigued and entertained me.
The first entry in the series is a definite solid exploitation B-movie. Rob Cohen does a competent job directing, but really it's the zen-like Vin Diesel performance that makes this a cut above a straight-to-video movie.
Paul Walker does a fine job, and Michelle Rodriguez delivers a sassy performance, but this is Vin's movie.
Vin manages to convey a sense of contained rage, menace, calm and a code of honour much like his fantastic turn as Riddick in Pitch Black.
The car stunts are impressive, but most of the CGI work is horribly dated.
I have to say that although its essentially a Point Break remake with cars I really quite enjoyed it. However, I've heard the second entry almost killed the franchise before it got underway so I approach it with trepidation.
Next 2 Fast 2 Furious.
