Always interesting to watch how franchises start as well as watching them out of order, since I came into the franchise at Justin Lin's involvement with the franchise began with the fourth installment.

So obviously a little hard to gauge the original as a stand alone piece since it now part of an overall arc, but at the same time warrant to be viewed as singular since I am assuming it wasnt intended to be such a long running venture rather than just a remake of a film property from the 50's.

As such pretty much best viewed as a grindhouse film with a decided early Aughts feel and pinching plot elements from the early 90's classic Point Break to round out some characters (hot shot cop w a love of street racing going under cover and falling in love with a woman, this case the sister of the big bad in order to get to him).

Defintely worth watching since a lot of the points were brought forward to the forth installment which pretty much acts as a reboot and defintely hold up, and great to see a lot of the principles then were brought forward to play the same parts.

Individually though it has defintely aged a bit since then and a product of its time and has been surpassed by later installments.
