Review of The Fast and the Furious (2001) by Kyle S — 04 Apr 2015
"The Fast and the Furious" has a charm that I can't really explain with reason. It's kind of lame in the fun kind of way, as opposed to lame in the cringeworthy kind of way.
And it is pretty lame. The dialogue, acting and plot are second to the car chases, guns and girls, and the soundtrack, which includes Ja Rule and Limp Bizkit, is about as lame early-2000s as you can get.
But the car chases, shot with intentional shaky-cam and sporadic slow motion, are great fun to watch, and despite the slightly over-melodramatic acting (Paul Walker still has a little bit of crossover from his soap opera days here) it was quite easy to connect with the characters.
This is a fun movie, and a solid start to the series. The story is ridden with unanswered questions, so I could easily see how sequels could improve upon it. Not a great movie by any means, but something fun to watch if it's on.
