Review of The Fast and the Furious (2001) by Keshav P — 08 May 2015
I thought it was time to visit this franchise what with the illustrious release of Fast & Furious 7 and the death of a star of these films Paul Walker.
The DVD of this 2001 film (is it really that old?) had been gathering dust for a while.
The film does not really appeal to non petrol heads like me with street racing and fast cars being the main premise of the franchise.
I was surprised however by some plot development in this debut movie. Basically the background character development of the Vin Diesel and Paul Walker roles as Dominic Toretto and Brian O'Connor.
O'Connor (Walker) is an undercover Los Angeles cop working undercover in the street racing fraternity trying to solve a multi-million dollar crime spree in stealing DVD players from trucks! Yes DVD players. It is 2001 after all.
Toretto (Diesel) seems to be the head street racer/suspect however O'Connor actually befreinds him and falls for his sister Mia played by Jordana Brewster.
Some of the car chases are good but for me lack some of the excitement of those seen in films by the Julienne stunt team.
The plot has been done many times before but the environment hasn't a lot.
Interesting to see Rick Yune in the film. He later of course starred in the Bond film Die Another Day.
Now for the next however many films in the franchise!
