Review of The Family Stone (2005) by Jonathan A — 22 Dec 2010
Straightlaced guy brings his uptight girlfriend home for Christmas to his close-knit, uber-liberal family, where chaos ensues. At first I pretty much disliked the characters for their childish contempt for one another, and then the story took a clever twist that I don't see in a lot of romantic comedies and actually made the characters aware of their faults.
Unfortunately by that time, the film's tone goes all over the place and flounders into predictablility. Yet there's an endearing charm and sentimentality underneath it all, perhaps personifying the film itself.
But hey, it was shot at my alma mater (Drew University) and the surrounding town, so at least that made me happy.
