Review of The Family (2013) by Lane Z — 01 Dec 2013
Robert De Niro is one of the biggest type-cast gangster/mobsters in the game these days, especially with his old age. One should NEVER tire of seeing him in these roles because he always nails it, but one might cringe at a script like The Family.
He and Michelle Pfeiffer know exactly how to act in these flicks that are often predictable and familiar. Tommy Lee Jones wasn't worth the screen time he probably deserves if this film actually tried to be a serious gangster flick, but too many times the tone of the film goes from joking and laughing its way along to serious dirty gritty business.
The kids were all right, but they added to the fiction in a negative way. There was an unnecessary body count that left most of the kills not making any sense. I get that there's supposed to be an underlying tone of dark humor, but it's not kept consistent.
De Niro still looks sharp though.
