Review of The Family (2013) by Alvin Y — 27 Dec 2013
If this movie is a straight gangster movie, it would've been one of the bests of the year, and yet the result is still beyond good but not great. I admire the concept of the father-mother-son-daughter relationship here, they're all in capable of putting others in harm, and most of all, living the next day.
I also loved some of the things that we learned from the character of DeNiro, and I would've seen the other family members as well. This film also uses some 1970s-80s American Gangster movies backdrop such as referencing one classic gangster masterpiece and having the small town as a center of attraction for criminals and corrupt people.
And what's surprising is Luc Besson directed it, and taking it to some of his previous films like Leon and La Femme Nikita into this world. So, this is a worth seeing film but don't expect a good warm-heart at the end, you will have a fun crazy time here!
