Review of The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964) by Christopher S — 30 Jul 2007
This movie attempts to be another intelligent epic, but instead ends being a vast, bloated bore. Weak leads in Stephen Boyd and Sophia Loren (who are more wooden than Orlando Bloom in the Black Forest), poor use of an all-star supporting cast (with Omar Sharif, John Ireland, Anthony Quayle, and others in very brief cameos) and a story that just drags and drags and drags beyond all interest kill it.
The contrived pseudo-happy ending is one of the worst ever filmed. On the plus side, some of the battle scenes are excellent. And Alec Guinness and James Mason deliver performances far better than the material deserves.
Worth a look, but nothing special.
