Review of The Fall (2006) by Raffi N — 17 Sep 2010

I keep coming back to this film year after year. It truly feels like a child's fantasy come to life. To say that the visuals are beautiful is an understatement - the amount of time and thought it must have taken to scout the locations and design each and every shot is staggering, nearly every frame could be a painting.

I'm partial to Lee Pace because I've grown to like him so much from Pushing Daisies, and he gives a solid performance in this movie. The star is really Catinca Untaru, the ultracharming little girl with the adorable accent. It's hard for me to wrap my head around how a little girl whose first language is clearly not English can deliver such a phenomenal performance. Acting seems second nature to her.

You grow attached to the characters, both in the main story and within the fantasy world, and I found myself urging Lee Pace to continue telling the story just as the little girl was, and was just as dismayed when the story took a turn. It's rare for a movie to hook me as The Fall does, and that's why it's going to be one of my favorites for a long time.
