Definitely one of the most visually stunning films I've seen. Absolutely gorgeous in every way. There are images from this movie that I'll never forget.
And unlike many other visually grand pictures, there's some serious heart and depth to be found here. The principle cast very much mattered to me as I was watching, and looking for messages and information about them in the stories being told was a rewarding exercise of viewer involvement. I love stories about telling stories, and this one is told beautifully.
In some respects, the way it approached the 'fairy tale' or storied adventure is quite similar to what was done in Pans Labyrinth. It's beautiful, disturbing, doesn't need to be logical to make sense, and at times can be very uncompromising.
I adored this movie.
