It's a blatant Ripoff of other movies in some viewers eyes, but to me it's more of a Tribute to those movies...
Well the cast is a bunch of pretty decent actors, who have all became pretty big stars, and I also love that there not the same stereotypical teenagers that just run around screaming or wait to be saved.
Final Verdict: The effects are pretty cool, the alien looks pretty cool, all in all it's a fairly decent Rodriguez movie.
