Sure it's a derivative mix of Scream, Body Snatchers and The Thing but, director Rodriguez knows you know this and, with tongue firmly in cheek, just goes with it and has a spooky fun time with it.
.. and so does the audience. A fun little horror that represents well the Scream era "pop culture reference" horror flick.
