Review of The Face of Love (2013) by Thomas W — 22 Jul 2014
A romance for the underserved "over 40" crowd at the multiplexes, Face of Love stars Annette Bening (Being Julia, Bugsy) as widow Nikki who casually meets a man named Tom (Ed Harris - The Rock, The Hours) whom she becomes infatuated with because of his eerie resemblance to her departed husband.
Tom, an artist, understands the attraction and flirts back with the intelligent Nikki although he is never told what the basis of the attraction is. Nikki becomes somewhat possessive of her new relationship and fears those from her past -- her children, neighbors etc.
-- seeing Tom and ruining this new experience for her. Nikki is a difficult nut to crack open and I don't think the film succeeds in doing it completely ... even though Bening and Harris do fine in their respective roles.
By film's end, I am just as baffled by Nikki as I was at the beginning of the movie. Robin Williams (Good Will Hunting, Insomnia) co-stars as a nosey neighbor harboring feelings for Nikki and Amy Brenneman (Heat, 88 Minutes) plays a still-friendly ex of Harris' who alone seems to question what Nikki is up to.
