Review of The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989) by Robert J C — 03 Nov 2010
The Fabulous Baker Boys is a fabulous movie. Jeff Bridges, Beau Bridges, and Michelle Pfeiffer. Shaken, stirred...and smolder to a slow burn. I think that jazz people and romantics might like this movie the most. Do movie studios make movies like this anymore? One of my uncles is a jazz drummer, and, I remember conversations about jazz, opportunities to see him and the band perform, how jazz became 'corporate' and lost the art, the improvisation. Whatever did or did not happen to jazz in this country, I feel like this movie is almost like walking down somebody else's memory lane, two brothers' memory lane who been working together too long and then a woman comes between them, not purposefully, but like a lit match falling to a pile of dry autumn leaves. This movie is a wonderful implosion of drama and song with lots of chemistry and great story by Steve Kloves.
Stay, funny valentine, stay.
