Review of The Extra Man (2010) by Dickie L — 09 Sep 2010
Imagine a film where John C Reilly has big boofy hair, an even boofier beard and a voice like Mr Hanky, Paul Dano is a cross dresser and Kevin Kilne is a fruity lounge lizard who paints his ankles because he "forgot to buy socks again".
Welcome to the world of The Extra Man. This slice of inspired lunacy has one chortle inducing line after another - well, at least for most of its length. It has to be said though that meeting Kevin Kline's character is a lot better than getting to know him well.
He's a riot when we he first appears, but as Paul Dano's character opines, we never really get to know him. Dano himself is great as the lingerie loving wannabe writer. I thought There Will Be Blood and Little Miss Sunshine were the two most overrated films of the 00's, but he's really good in this, with his sad, crooked face and his understated delivery.
The film peters out to a blah conclusion, but otherwise its as bright and alluring as one of Kevin Kline's Christmas balls.
