Review of The Extra Man (2010) by Sally J — 10 Dec 2010
A disapointing movie in terms of what could have been. It could have been a serious drama about a young man (Paul Dano) seeking to be a writer, arriving to NY under the mentoring of an older man (Kevin Kline) who aspired to be a playwright.
Or, a satire about 2 different guys, one a transvestite and the other "An Extra Man" or aging giggolo, who are roommates in a shabby Manhattan apartment. It's none of those things and I'm still not sure what is the point.
There are glimpses of dry humor with some of the women played by Celia Weston and a delightful Marian Seldes as Vivian. Instead, the movie plays like a pseudo-comedy with a combination of too many hammy or listless performances, and sometimes you can't relate to the characters at all.
A forgetable movie...but with usually reliable John C. Reilly deserving of a worst supporting actor award for this dud.
