Review of The Experiment (2010) by Sean W — 28 Sep 2010
Sometimes men are no more civilized than wild animals. Thatâ??s the message this movie wants to convey, it does it in the opening credits and the rest of the time weâ??re watching a prison experiment that goes wrong.
I suppose it wouldnâ??t be a very interesting movie if it went right. Unfortunately for us, the only interesting character is played by Forest Whitaker (he can do a lot with very little) and everyone else is reduced to a caricature.
Adrien Brody does fine as the â??straight manâ?? but has nothing to work with. There are a lot worse low-budget flicks out there, as this oneâ??s completely watchable. But the makers take a few ideas and donâ??t bother to flesh them out.
The rules of the game are stated, but even those running the experiment donâ??t really abide by them. I didnâ??t even mention the prologue involving a rally and a girlfriend that was completely unnecessary.
Thatâ??s the problem with this movie; a whole lot of shit that really isnâ??t that interesting. I donâ??t mind if I know the beginning and the end, but itâ??s the journey that stays with you. This movie journeys nowhere.
