Review of The Expendables 3 (2014) by Johnathon W — 13 Jul 2015
Over-stuffed film that just isn't as fun as the previous ones. The main problem is the 'new generation' of Expendables, who add nothing to the cast & take away of the main appeal of the franchise in having old-school action stars team-up.
Wesley Snipes is particularly under-used, though he gets brief moments to shine, and Antonio Banderas is a lot of fun as the over-enthusiastic Galgo. Mel Gibson is great as the villain Stonebanks, putting his trademark crazed intensity to great use & having more fun than the rest of the cast.
Hughes delivers some solid direction, though the final act is so ponderous & over-the-top it actually gets boring (though you do get a "Rocky" vs. "Riggs" fight that is fun to watch).
Currently, it's streaming on Netflix & Amazon Prime, so worth checking out that way. Otherwise, don't drop money directly on this film.
