Review of The Expendables (2000) by Mommakat D — 02 Dec 2012
To be honest, I was disappointed, but not in the way I had expected. This film had so much awesomeness attached to it going in, that it seemed impossible that it would live up to the hype. The cast featured the greatest gathering of 80s-90s testosterone ever seen.
It was a fanboy's wet dream. I expected the film would be all action all the time and buried in cheese, but instead witnessed a bit of a muddled mess with not enough action - or at least not the right kind.
Considering the epic nature of this film, one would think the script would have been equally epic. Instead, we get a story about a generic Latin country, with a generic oppressive general and generic suits in control.
Really? This is why we brought all this awesomeness together? We couldn't come up with something better than this? Beyond the premise, though, the dialogue and character development are also weak.
Some scenes seemed improvised or had lines that seemed to come out of nowhere while others had rambling, almost incomprehensible monologues. Oh wait - I just noticed Sly wrote this. Yeah, that's too bad.
As for the action, it looked alright, I guess, but there just wasn't enough of the right kind. I expected more one-on-one throwdowns featuring dream match-ups. Maybe if there had been more stars on the bad guys' side.
Did the Nogueiras even throw a punch? I wanted to like this film. It just wasn't as fun as it should have been. Maybe the sequel will get it right?
