Review of The Expendables (2000) by Bradley O — 08 Sep 2012
I don't care how old they are, it's still really cool to see a lot of the action stars I worshiped as a kid join forces for a film like this. It's reminiscent of the 80's epics that served as star vehicles for Stallone, Willis, and others.
It uses a lot of the same formulaic story techniques and action sequences, however it's not quite as good as those violent classics of yesteryear. The chemistry among the actors is present and effective, but the focus is never on the acting.
The story is a little bland and uninteresting, and there are quite a few odd plot points that really only serve as reasons to create more carnage. The action is pretty impressive and it's good to see these guys working together, even if it took this long.
For these reasons it ends up being a pretty good film.
