Review of The Expendables (2000) by Trenton R — 08 Nov 2013
The Expendables (2010).
What can I say? Ever since seeing Bruce Lee fight Chuck Norris in "The Way of the Dragon" (1972), guys have always argued over which action movie hero can kick what other action movie hero's ass. Sometimes we'll luck out and see one or two hash it out, but in "The Expendables" , we get to see a whole bunch of them fight each other. Granted, many of these guys are pretty old now, but still, this is a treat for guys. :-).
The storyline is pretty standard, predictable fare. Just what you would expect from Sylvester Stallone. Barney Ross (Stallone) is the leader of a bunch of mercenary workers who get into difficult situations and get results. Although they do tend to fight amongst themselves just as much.
They get an assignment from CIA agents, Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) and Trench (Arnold Schwarzenegger) to go into a Central American country to kill a dictator, General Garza (David Zayas) who is being handled by an ex-CIA drug runner, James Monroe (Eric Roberts) and his army of merc. workers.
Barney flies down to check out the situation with Lee Christmas (Jason Statham). They meet a pretty revolutionary, Sandra Garza (Giselle Itié), who is yes, the General's sister. Barney and Lee are barely able to escape with their lives, but you know they're going to go back to kick some serious butt.
